SUV crashes through roof of Escondido home

ESCONDIDO (CBS 8) – Police officers are investigating an early morning crash in which a driver of a BMW SUV crashed through the roof of an Escondido house overnight.

Just after midnight, a driver lost control of the SUV on a hill, veered off the road, flew 40 feet before smashing into the garage of a house in the 1600 block of Hubbard Place.

The homeowners say they were asleep when they were suddenly startled by a massive boom. The emergency system in the BMW called 911, after the airbags deployed, and then firefighters arrived at the scene and banged on their door to make sure nobody was hurt.

"We thought it was an earthquake. My wife was really freaked out,” said homeowner George Strother.

The homeowners are fine. It's not certain if the Strother's home insurance will cover the cost of damages. A Nissan Pathfinder and Mazda Miata were in the garage at the time of the crash and were destroyed.

After the crash the driver of the SUV, which is a loaner from BMW, fled the scene.

Meanwhile, Ben Port, 37, was arrested on an unrelated domestic violence charge around 3 a.m. Wednesday. Apparently, Port lives on the same street of the SUV crash, however police are not confirming if he is the driver of the SUV.

"The investigation is being conducted to see if those two incidents are linked," said Lt. Eric Skaja with the Escondido Police Department.

Despite the damage, police say this is considered a hit-and-run misdemeanor

This crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Escondido Police Department.
