Man pleads not guilty in fatal road rage crash

VISTA (CNS) - An 18-year-old North County resident accused in a road rage crash in Escondido that left another young man dead pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges of gross vehicular manslaughter, assault with a deadly weapon and hit-and-run.

Juan Rebollar was ordered held on $500,000 bail.

Rebollar allegedly got into a rolling dispute with 19-year-old Jose De Jesus Garcia in the area of Valley and Bear Valley parkways shortly before midnight Friday.

The two Escondido residents wound up speeding off to the northeast, according to police. Rebollar allegedly crashed his vehicle intentionally into Garcia's Toyota truck, causing it to skid out of control and smash into a pillar near James Street, and then fled, Lt. Eric Skaja said.

Paramedics took Garcia to Palomar Medical Center, where he later died. A companion who had been riding in his pickup truck was treated for minor injuries, the lieutenant said.

Rebollar was arrested Saturday and booked into county jail in Vista. He faces 11 years in state prison if convicted.

A readiness conference was set for Dec. 19 and a preliminary hearing for Dec. 24.
