NCTD holds active shooter drill

OCEANSIDE (CBS 8) - Firefighters and other first responders came together Wednesday to train for an emergency drill conducted by the North County Transit District.

"It's a situation you hope never happens, but you have to be prepared for it just in case. The scenario in Wednesday's drill was an active shooter on the Coaster.

As part of the drill, a man paced back and forth on the Coaster, randomly shooting people on the train, triggering chaos.

Deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department took the lead inside the Coaster, giving them practice with very unique challenges. For one, the train could be moving and going through multiple jurisdictions. Then there's the cramped quarters.

"You got a tube with constrained spots, very constrained space and it's two levels with a lot of areas for concealment, so it does pose a significant challenge for those first responders,"

In this drill, the shooter takes his own life before deputies can take him into custody. But even with suspect dead, there's still a chaotic scene with injuries. The Oceanside fire department took over from there, making sure those that needed to get to the hospital were transported. The entire drill took about 90 minutes, and organizers were pleased with the results.

"I think it went excellent," one participant said.

Wednesday's drill did not take place on the main tracks, so Coaster service was not affected. Crews set up a code word to use in the case of a real emergency during the drill.
