Fire officials share safety tips for the holidays

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - San Diego fire officials are offering safety tips this holiday season.

Decorative lights, candles and heaters are all common themes during the holidays, but they're also reasons why fires can start.

In order to prevent a fire, it's recommended that you buy a tree that's not dry, place it a safe distance from any heat source and replace all tree lights that have frayed or broken wires.

"We really urge that if you're going to be away from the house or when you go to bed, the lights get unplugged and you don't plug them back in until the next morning," Doug Perry of San Diego Fire-Rescue said.

Officials also warn that you be especially careful when you're on a ladder putting up your outdoor lights to reduce the chance of falling.

Some of the footage used in this video was shot using a GoPro camera.
