SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A dolphin brought to SeaWorld San Diego Saturday after being rescued in Long Beach died Tuesday, according to the theme park.
The Risso's dolphin, a larger variety not usually seen close to shore, was believed to have been suffering from an infection and suffered wounds from his beaching, according to SeaWorld. The marine mammal -- measured at 7 feet long and 224 pounds -- was also dehydrated and malnourished.
The dolphin's condition declined earlier Tuesday, and it died just after 3 p.m., according to SeaWorld.
"The rescue team is really disappointed," said Jody Westberg, SeaWorld San Diego's stranded animal coordinator. "This was a unique opportunity to rehabilitate such a rarely seen dolphin. We are very saddened by his death, but the knowledge we gained from this process will make us that much more prepared to take care of the next Risso's dolphin that needs our help."
SeaWorld said a necropsy will be performed to try to determine the cause of death.
Risso's dolphins generally stick to warm waters and are seen only occasionally off San Diego, according to SeaWorld.
