MTS and Santa deliver new bikes for the holidays

Almost every kid dreams of a shiny new bicycle under the tree on Christmas morning.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – Almost every kid dreams of a shiny new bicycle under the tree on Christmas morning.

The Metropolitan Transit District and Santa Claus teamed up Wednesday morning to make that a dream come true for some very lucky first graders.

The tradition began 10 Christmases ago with three longtime MTS employees. Five hundred bike giveaways later, and Roberta, Vance and Joe say the magical moment never gets old.

More than 50 first graders at Perkins Elementary filed in for what they thought was a pedestrian safety presentation, and just when a few eyes started to glaze over with boredom, two bikes rolled in for two lucky students. Just before boredom turned to envy, Santa showed up.

The children were then told to close their eyes and count down from 10. That's when the tarp hiding the bikes was removed. It's one MTS ride the kids will never forget.

"I'm going to ride it home forever, and ride it back to school," one child said.
