3 killed in I-15 crash identified

A vehicle crash on Interstate 15 in Fallbrook has killed at least three people, authorities said.

FALLBROOK (CNS) - The driver and two passengers killed in a rollover crash near Fallbrook while en route to a funeral service in Mexicali were publicly identified on Saturday.

The driver was Jerson Ariel Duron Valeriano, 25, of South El Monte.

His wife, 22-year-old Edith Duron, also of South El Monte, and Ivette Garcia, 21, of Los Angeles, were fatally injured.

A witness driving behind the Ford Expedition said he saw a tire tread separate from a wheel on Interstate 15, just south of the Riverside-San Diego county line.

The vehicle spun out of control shortly before 12:30 p.m. Friday, according to the county Medical Examiner's Office and the California Highway Patrol.

The SUV tumbled over a center barrier then came to rest upside down alongside the northbound lanes, investigators said.

Following the crash, medics took the SUV's other passengers, a 2-year-old girl, the driver's 21-year-old brother and a 43-year-old woman, to hospitals for treatment of apparently minor injuries, according to CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt.

The child is the daughter of Valeriano and Duron, who was the surviving woman's daughter.

The group was traveling to Mexico to attend a memorial service for the oldest woman's father, Bettencourt said.

FALLBROOK (CNS) - A half-dozen people on their way to Mexico for a funeral were injured Friday, three fatally, when a blowout caused an SUV to crash and overturn on Interstate 15 in the far northern reaches of San Diego County.

A sheriff's deputy driving directly behind the group's black Ford Expedition in Fallbrook saw one of its rear tires suddenly shred to pieces near West Lilac Road shortly before 12:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

The SUV then careened off the freeway, tumbled over a center barrier and came to rest upside down alongside the northbound lanes, CHP public-affairs Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

Two women and a man died at the scene. Medics took a 2-year-old girl and another man and woman to hospitals for treatment of apparently minor injuries.

The child is the daughter of one of the deceased women, both of whom had been riding unrestrained in the back of the Expedition, Bettencourt said.

The victims' names were not immediately available.

The wreck forced the closure of stretches of the two centermost lanes of the interstate for a time and led to heavy traffic in the area into the mid-afternoon.
