Firefighters deliver gifts to burn victim and family

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Christmas came early this year when firefighters brought presents and holiday cheer to a burn survivor and her big family of ten.

“I'm really happy that my brothers and sisters are going to get something” said Isaias Zeferino.

Five year old Sharon suffered second degree burns after being accidentally scalded with hot soup in June.

“She was really scared” says her brother, Jonathan Zeferino. “She wanted to faint because she was tired. She was thinking she was going to die.”

It was a difficult time for the family both financially and emotionally. Too add to their troubles, their mother passed away recently after delivering her newborn.

Firefighters from San Diego Fire and Rescue Engine 35 raised personal money to help the family this Christmas through the Burn Institute.

“Every time I read a biography on the family it's hard not to get choked up because of the drastic things that have happened to this family” says Captain Jamie Nichols, San Diego Fire Rescue.

The number one cause of burns to children in San Diego are scalds.

Be extremely careful when cooking or using hot water and beverages around children.
