14-year-old Eliga's coast-to-coast success story

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – This Adopt 8 success story spans the country. A California boy is now living on the East Coast in his new forever home.

When we first met Eliga in 2010, it was clear he felt right at home in front of the camera. He made a direct plea to our viewers.

"Kids out there like me need a home," he said.

Three years later in 2013, we met up with him again.

"I would like a nice loving family," he told us.

Eliga was still waiting to find his forever family, but remained hopeful it would happen.

"I'd like to be adopted, whoever wants to adopt someone," he said.

His story was posted on our web site, and a family on the other side of the country, in Maryland, made a life-changing online connection.

"I saw Eliga's video and I just knew at that time that he was he was the child for our family, and we stopped looking at that point for any other children," mother Kelly said.

Kelly and Norbert say they instantly knew Eliga would make a fantastic big brother for their biological son Nolan. Eliga's joyful disposition touched their heart.

"He seemed to have a really great sense of humor, goofy. We're goofy, it fit. We were looking for a child who had a nice temperament and Eliga seemed very sweet, and he seemed very bright," Kelly said.

They then watched the first story we did on Eliga in 2010, where he mentioned the environment. That sealed the deal.

"As soon as we heard that -- and we're the ultimate tree huggers -- so we said, this is our kid," Norbert said.

They say it took some time to work through the red tape of an out-of-state adoption, but all agree it was well worth the wait.

Eliga, who's now 14, has really grown this past year.

"He has outgrown me, so we share clothes. It words out nice," Norbert said.

"Not underwear or socks," Eliga said.

Eliga knows he's lucky.

"Really spectacularly, fabulously lucky," he said.

But his family says they are the ones who are blessed, and 10-year-old Nolan loves having a sibling and best friend.

"He's funny and we have a lot in common," Nolan said.

"FYI, I also have the best brother," Eliga joked.

Now it's official. Eliga's family was in San Diego the week before Thanksgiving to finalize his adoption at the annual court party, where dozens of other kids legally joined their forever families as well. Now Eliga can sign off to our cameras with this:

"I am Eliga and I have a new family, as shown," he said.
