Dangerous fire breaks out in College area

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – CBS News 8 captured cell phone video of 100 foot flames shooting from palm trees in the College area Thursday night.

Around 7:15 p.m. San Diego Fire & Rescue crews were called to fire upgraded to a first alarm vegetation fire in the canyon between Alvarado and College Avenue and south of Interstate 8.

“We had them stage on Alvarado road which you can see in the parking lot behind us is very limited. We had water supply from a fire hydrant which is very good for fire engines that way we can put a lot of water on these trees to prevent rekindles,” said Battalion Chief David Pilkerton.

Investigators believe the fire was started by a cooking fire from a transient camp.

“It's cold out here and they have to cook, they use a cooking fire which is illegal. You see the second-hand results and it's going to start a vegetation fire and it could cause death or injury if they get burned,” said Pilkerton.

No one was hurt in the fire but a second transient camp was discovered and a city arborist has been called in.

“In case they do start a fire again at least if they are they are down on the ground we can follow them so we can remove any danger or hazard if there is anyone down here at the river bottom,” said Pilkerton.

A homeless man died in a fire the Sweetwater Riverbed across from Plaza Bonita Mall in August. National City police and fire crews forced out people living in the encampments.

In San Diego crews say they will work with enforcement on this encampment.
