SAN DIEGO (CNS/CBS 8) - A minister is recovering Monday after he was shot while sitting in a car in front of his church in Grant Hill.

The shooting at Greater Apostolic Faith Temple Church at 138 28th St. was reported at 8:21 p.m. Sunday, according to San Diego police Officer Robert Heims.

The victim was with another minister in a parked car, talking, when a gunman approached on foot and fired four rounds into a passenger side window, Heims said in a statement, adding that the victim was sitting in the passenger seat.

"One of the bullets grazed the passenger's chest and went into his arm," Heims said. He was expected to survive.

The church has confirmed the victim is their pastor, Dwayne Sheperd. CBS News 8 spoke with Charles Edmundson, a deacon at the church.

"All I know is he's in the hospital, very little information that I have," he said.

Edmundson says this couldn't have happened to a nicer man.

"God-fearing man. He loves everyone, and he does a lot of work in the community, even for those who don't attend. So for something like this to happen, it's devastating," he said.

Police described the gunman as black, in his 20s, 5 foot 10 and 160 pounds, last seen wearing a black baseball cap and black clothing.

The motive for the shooting was under investigation.
