Woman killed, husband hurt while jaywalking New Year's Eve

An elderly couple is in the hospital Thursday morning with serious injuries after they were hit by a pickup truck and car in El Cajon.

EL CAJON (CBS 8) - An elderly couple was hit by a pickup truck and car in El Cajon and one of them has died as a result of their injuries.

Police say 80-year-old Rosie Mondejar died from her injuries and her husband, Merlin Mondejar, suffered serious wounds.

The couple was not using a crosswalk when they were hit by two vehicles at the intersection of Washington and Van Houten Avenue in El Cajon around 8:00 p.m. Wednesday.

The man was hit by a pickup truck and was briefly pinned underneath it. Meanwhile, the woman was hit by the car. They were both rushed to Sharp Memorial Hospital.

Police say both drivers stopped and it does not appear alcohol was involved.

Police say due to the New Year's Eve holiday, there was increased traffic on the roadways.

"Lot more pedestrians drivers were out and unfortunately with dark clothing it's hard to see pedestrians," explained Lt. Randy Soulard with the El Cajon Police Department Traffic Unit.

CBS News 8 was told the couple lives in the area and was walking home Wednesday night.
