OCEANSIDE (CBS8/CNS) - An investigation is under way Monday in Oceanside into what sparked a mobile home fire that killed a woman and seriously injured her husband and two dogs.

The fire in space No. 71 at 4660 North River Road was reported around 6:30 p.m. Sunday and took about 40 minutes to knock down, according to Oceanside fire Battalion Chief Felipe Rodriguez.

When firefighters arrived, one man had already escaped the fire. He was in serious condition, suffering from burns and smoke inhalation.

"The husband said an adult stepson was still inside. Being that we never found him, he either was there and left or never was there," Rodriguez said.

The husbands wife, a woman in her sixties, was found dead in the home.

"(She) appeared to have been trying to find refuge in her bathtub," he said.

Paramedics flew her husband to UCSD Medical Center to treat serious burn injuries, Rodriguez said.

Two dogs rescued from the fire were turned over to the local humane society, Rodriguez said, adding both dogs sustained burn injuries but were in stable condition.

"Damage to the home is estimated to be a complete loss and at $150,000," he said, adding there was also some fire damage to a neighboring carport but firefighters kept the flames from other homes in the park.

Authorities located a third resident following the fire and interviewed him. The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
