National City votes down alcohol sales at AMC Theater

Posted: Updated:
SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - In a 3-2 vote, National City's council rejected a proposal Tuesday night which would permit AMC Theaters to sell beer, wine and liquor at its Plaza Bonita location.

Community members railed against the idea, arguing that alcohol sales would erode the theater's family-friendly atmosphere.

AMC executives said that alcohol is already sold at 101 of its theaters across the country, as a way of attracting more adult customers and remaining competitive. They also said that there have been no reported problems at any of its locations because of their alcohol sales.

Before the council's vote, National City's mayor pushed for approval of the license, pointing out the economic benefits to the city. National City's Chamber of Commerce also backed the proposal, citing the additional jobs and tax revenue it would generate.

AMC executives estimated that offering alcohol at its Plaza Bonita location in National City would bring in $500,00 to $700,000 in additional sales every year.

AMC Theaters in Chula Vista and La Jolla already offer alcohol to its customers.

The chain is currently pursuing another license at a second Chula Vista location in Otay Ranch.
