Local family has fostered 48 children

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A local couple shares what being a foster family has meant to them. San Diego County has recognized them as exceptional foster parents, who have a "whatever it takes" attitude to give countless children a new start in life.

People consider them remarkable, but this amazing couple says they are the ones whose lives have been blessed by fostering.

An even four dozen - that's how many foster children Pat and Patty have taken in over the past 17 years. They say being foster parents has kept them young.

Years ago, three of their foster children became permanent members of their family. The three sons are all in their 20's now.

It's clear that Pat and Patty they make a great team. They explained that Pat is the entertainment and Patty handles the administrative duties, such as paperwork, school work.

And the four biological siblings they are currently fostering, couldn't be more grateful to have this wonderful couple, as their foster parents.

“I appreciate them because they showed us a life that we never had and they gave us new opportunities,” said Destiney.

Fourteen-year-old Destiney and her three younger siblings are hoping to find a forever family, but they say the love they have received from their foster family the past two years is something they will cherish for the rest of their lives - especially after experiencing so much trauma and pain before meeting this couple.

“The life that we used to have was terrible and I think that no kid should ever have to go through what most kids do go through,” explained Destiney.

For 48 foster kids, though, Pat and Patty have been an inspiring force to give them hope for a better future.

“There's a lot of things a teenager goes through and I wish I could get a family that I know will love and care for me the way my foster parents do now,” continued Destiney.

“Everybody says oh, you do so much for the kids, the kids do way more for us than we ever did for them. They do it for us,” said Patty. “They keep you young, they keep you happy. They keep you in love with life.”
