Teen's family takes the stand in arson trial

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – The mother and sister of a teen girl accused of starting last year's devastating Cocos Fire took the stand Thursday in her trial.

During Thursday's proceedings, the unidentified 14-year-old girl's sister cried while answering questions from the prosecutor.

The Cocos Fire scorched 2,000 acres and destroyed 36 homes. During the defendant's sister's testimony, she seemed unsure when answering many questions. She also seemed to forget much of what she originally told investigators. In fact, many of her answers seemed to contradict initial statements she made, or what first responders saw.

The prosecution says a day before the Cocos Fire started, her sister started another fire. Firefighters who responded to that fire saw the two girls at the scene.

"The reason I noticed them is they were coming in and out of this house. For lack of a better word they were giggling," Timothy Bergon of San Marcos Fire said.
