Missing jet skier report turns out to be big mistake

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A man reported missing while on the back of a rented jet ski in Mission Bay Channel was found safe Friday.

Crews searched Mission Bay for about an hour Friday afternoon when they received word that the 19-year-old had been located on the Paradise Point jetty.

The man's mother, who was at the front of the jet ski, initially reported that the two were thrown from the watercraft after she crashed at a high rate of speed. It turns out he fell off the back of the jet ski before the crash, and she didn't realize it.

"I think this is a clear case of inexperience with a rented PWC, and these types of things happen when you don't have experience," San Diego Lifeguard Lt. James Gartland said.

The 19-year-old was being looked at by medics as a precaution.

Authorities say they won't pursue any charges against the woman.
