Source of bad smell in Kearny Mesa found

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - County investigators Friday traced the source of a bad smell that had people holding their noses from Kearny Mesa to Clairemont.

Turns out the smell was coming from California Commercial Asphalt plant in Kearny Mesa. The county Air Pollution Control District says the odor was created by a large batch of asphalt the company was cooking up. Agents say it was stinky, but not to worry.

"It's not a health nuisance. Basically is just an offensive odor. The material they are dealing with is fairly smelly and when they heat it up, it's called rubberized asphalt," Robert Kard of APCD said.

Investigators say the company will likely receive a public nuisance violation.
