Homes evacuated after gas line breaks in Leucadia

LEUCADIA (CBS 8) - A gas leak led to the evacuation of more than a dozen homes in Leucadia Saturday morning.

It happened around 11:00 a.m. in the 1200 block of Rainbow Ridge Lane near Capri Road and it took a while for crews to turn off the gas.

Firefighters were quick to arrive and asked those living close to the leak to leave the area.

Evacuations dragged on for more than two hours. The delay was due to a lack of enough qualified SDG&E workers on sight to safely stop the leak.

Once all the necessary technicians arrived, they were able to shut off the gas leak in about ten minutes and residents were allowed back in their homes.

Firefighters say local construction crews caused the leak when they accidentally ruptured an external gas line.

No injuries were reported.
