Innocent bystander not expected to survive shooting

An assault on a teenager by four people with a baseball bat Saturday morning ended with shots fired, leaving another man shot.
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An assault on a teenager by four people with a baseball bat Sunday morning ended with shots fired, leaving one man injured.

Police said the injured 24-year-old man is not expected to survive the shooting, which was intended for someone else at a home in the City Heights neighborhood.

The attack began when an 18-year-old man was assaulted with a baseball bat by three or four suspects in the
3800 block of Central Avenue
. The 18-year-old man was chased by the suspects to a front yard, where people were having a social gathering, the police lieutenant said.

The 18-year-old man pleaded to the family for help and was told to hide inside the residence. The suspects entered the front yard, firing several rounds from a handgun at the 18-year-old man. Missing their target, one of the rounds struck a 24-year-old man in the head.

Officers were dispatched at 2:42 a.m. to the residence. Paramedics rushed the victim to Mercy Hospital, where he was listed in grave condition, San Diego police Lt. Paul Rorrison said.

"Due to the victim's prognosis, homicide detectives were called to conduct the investigation into the incident," Rorrison said. "Interviews and evidence collected are taking place in the 3800 block of Central Avenue, which will be closed for the next few hours."

San Diego police homicide detectives asked anyone with any information regarding the assault and the shooting to call them at (619) 531-2293.
