SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A homeowner escaped a close call early Thursday, as a driver flew off the road and crashed into his backyard in Bay Terraces.

The driver of a Hyundai drove down a steep curve, lost control of his car and flew down a hill into the backyard of a home in the 2300 block of Manzana Way shortly after 1:00 a.m. Thursday. The car destroyed a fence and almost crashed into the house.

The crash caused a loud boom and woke up the homeowner who later said that the suspect stopped to apologize after the incident.

One neighbor also reported hearing screeching tires.

"He was going a lot faster than most people speed. His tires and brakes locked up and his tires proceeded to twist. At that point I knew there was going to be an accident it was a matter how bad,” said neighbor Raquel Halterman.

No injuries were reported, but the homeowner, Andrew Belleperche, was shaken up and said this was the second time a crash like this happened.

"First time, a white CRV took out 31 feet of fence and trash cans and 20 feet grass,” explained Belleperche.

Officers arrested the driver at the scene and initial reports revealed that he failed a sobriety test and faces a DUI charge. Officers say he cooperated with them during the arrest.

The car has since been towed from the residence.
