OCEANSIDE (CNS) - A 58-year-old Oregon man allegedly assaulted a female police officer who interrupted his sleeping Saturday morning on a beach in northern Oceanside.

The officer approached the suspect -- later identified as Alan Wayne Croghan -- as he was asleep in the vicinity of Surfrider Way and The Strand and woke him up about 6:45 a.m., Oceanside police Lt. Leonard Cosby said.

Croghan refused to hand over his identification and disobeyed the officer's orders to remain seated, Cosby said.

Cosby said Croghan then lunged at the officer and knocked her to the ground. She struck her head on a large rock and the suspect jumped on her, yelling that he would kill her, according to the lieutenant.

Croghan continued to assault the officer until another officer arrived and struck him with her baton, Cosby said.

He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer, felony assault on a police officer and assault with injury on a police officer, according to Cosby.

The officer -- a nine-year OPD veteran -- was treated at a hospital and released, the lieutenant said.
