Two-alarm house fire in Carlsbad, women and pets rescued

Two elderly women were hospitalized after a fire tore through their Carlsbad home.

CARLSBAD (CBS 8) - Two elderly women were hospitalized after a fire tore through their Carlsbad home.

The fire was reported just after 8:30 p.m. Monday on Levante Street near Morada Street. When fire crews arrived on scene they found heavy flames in the back and attic of the home.

Firefighters pulled two elderly women and their two dogs from the home and say several factors made for a difficult rescue.

"One of the residents is actually an elderly handicapped female. She was encountered in one of the bedrooms. Again, they had a lot of material inside the bedroom when they made entry through a back sliding glass window,” said Battalion Chief Luis Osuna with the Carlsbad Fire Department.

Fire crews mopped up the scene for hot spots throughout the night and the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
