Man convicted of road rage beating to be sentenced

EL CAJON (CNS) - Sentencing is scheduled Tuesday for a La Mesa man who beat a 76-year-old Army veteran during a road-rage dispute in an El Cajon parking lot last year.

Thomas Clayton Sikes, 57, was convicted of assault causing great bodily injury and elder abuse in connection with the attack on Ron Tornocello on April 30, 2014.

Sikes -- who is about 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 285 pounds -- attacked the older man about 10 a.m. after a dispute in a parking lot in the 500 block of Fletcher Parkway in El Cajon, then fled in a red SUV.

The victim was talking on a cell phone while driving in a parking lot outside a drugstore, and that set off his attacker, authorities said. Surveillance cameras captured images of the fight, which left the victim with broken bones in his face, among other serious injuries.

Sikes' attorney said his client acted in self-defense. The defendant, who was arrested on July 24, 2014, based on an anonymous tip, faces nine years in prison if convicted, Deputy District Attorney Carlos Campbell said.

Sikes has a history of driving-related violence, according to the prosecution.
