SAN DIEGO (CNS) - One of two men who participated in the "thrill" killing of a 21-year-old developmentally disabled man in Lincoln Acres was convicted Wednesday of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Juan Ignacio Gomez, 24, faces life in prison without the possibility of parole when he is sentenced April 24 in connection with the April 2011 shooting death of Jordan Hickey.

Jurors found true a special circumstance that the murder was carried out by discharging a shotgun from a motor vehicle.

Sheriff's deputies responding to a report of gunfire on April 29, 2011, found Hickey mortally wounded near his bicycle on a sidewalk alongside Grove Street, a few blocks from his home in National City. He died at the scene.

Authorities have said Gomez and the alleged gunman, 22-year-old Humberto Emanuel Galvez, were "driving around, essentially looking for someone to shoot," and just happened to pull up alongside Hickey.

"They hunted and massacred my son ... for nothing," the victim's mother, Jeannine Hickey, said outside court. "He was not a threat to anyone."

Galvez's trial is scheduled for May 20. He faces a possible death sentence if convicted.
