Crews break ground on joint-use park in Serra Mesa

School children and community members in Serra Mesa will soon be enjoying a brand new park.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – School children and community members in Serra Mesa will soon be enjoying a brand new park.

The City of San Diego and the San Diego Unified School District broke ground on a park adjacent to Wegeforth Elementary School.

The park will be used by students during school hours and will be open to the public after school, on holidays and during the summer.

District officials say getting rid of the school's current asphalt and concrete playground will make a difference.

"When you put grass at a school, it changes everything,” said SDUSD Superintendent Cindy Marten. "Kids will be running out there, playing out there, flying kites out there when they do science lessons."

The school district is providing the land for the park, and the city is paying for its construction.
