SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A suspected car thief lead police on a wild chase through a San Diego neighborhood.

The incident began just before 4:00 p.m. Saturday at a USA gas station at Navajo Road and Lake Murray Boulevard in San Carlos.

The suspect allegedly stole the car from a woman with the victim's cell phone still inside. Police used its GPS to track the vehicle four miles away on Rockhurst Drive in Del Cerro.

At one point, the suspect started running and officers on the ground received air support from the Sheriff's Department.

Eventually, police cornered the suspect on a hill in Del Cerro. A police dog took down the man, who somehow lost his pants during the chase.

After pursuing the suspect in hot temperatures, the K-9's handler realized the dog needed help and carried the dog away from the scene to give him water.

The K-9 was then transported to animal hospital for treatment
