Driver killed in Solana Beach crash

SOLANA BEACH (CNS) - A 59-year-old motorist was killed Saturday when he apparently had a medical emergency that caused him to lose consciousness and crash into another vehicle and a signal light post in Solana Beach, authorities said.

The man was driving east on Lomas Santa Fe Drive approaching South Cedros Avenue about 1:40 p.m. when his vehicle veered right in a southeast direction and struck another vehicle in the adjacent right-hand lane, San Diego County sheriff's Deputy Brenda Sipley said.

"The vehicle drove up onto the sidewalk, continued in an easterly direction and struck the signal lamp post located on the southwest corner of Lomas Santa Fe Drive and South Rios Drive," Sipley said. "The post was uprooted from its base and fell to the ground, striking another vehicle that was traveling eastbound."

The man was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Sipley said.

"He had preexisting medical conditions, was observed by witnesses slumped over the steering wheel as the vehicle drove off the roadway, and (was) believed to have been unconscious prior to impact," Sipley said.

The victim's name was withheld pending notification of kin.

No one else was injured, Sipley said.
