Victim's mother wants dangerous crosswalk closed

A 20-year-old woman struck by a car while crossing a freeway on-ramp faces a long and painful recovery.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Sylvia Bahr's daughter Sophia Swishuk has a long road to recovery.

Last week, she was hit by a car in a cross walk in Del Mar while walking her dog Diego. The crash fractured her face, shattered her shoulder, and broke her pelvis in four different places.

The Del Mar crosswalk is located on the on ramp for the northbound I-5. There is a single sign warning drivers that the crosswalk is there, but it's not easy to see.

"By the time drivers get to the ramp and the cross walk, they have already gained a lot of speed. Even if you would see somebody, it's almost impossible at that point to stop" says Sylvia.

Sylvia says there's really only one option to prevent this from happening again and that's to take out the crosswalk. Until that happens, she wants to give walkers the same warning she gave her daughter.

“I always told her not to go that way, it's very busy.”
