SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Authorities continue their search for a serial arsonist in City Heights, after two new fires were set overnight.

Flames erupted in a dumpster around 1:00 a.m. Tuesday in the alley east of 52nd Street and north of Landis Street near apartments and homes.

Minutes earlier, three mattresses were set on fire in the courtyard of an apartment building. That fire forced families out of their homes while firefighters put out the flames.

The two fires were lit just blocks away from each other.

San Diego Police officers have not made any arrested yet, but for the first time they may have spotted a suspect running away from the scene.

Investigators believe the fires are connected to the recent series of arson cases in City Heights where property is torched overnight or in the early morning hours. Neighbors in the area have discussed evacuation plans in case their homes are targeted.

There have been more than a dozen fires set since the beginning of the year.
