Final round for Carmel Highland Golf Course

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - As of Tuesday afternoon, the Carmel Highland Golf Course in Rancho Penasquitos is closed.

After being in business for nearly 50 years, the course was open to the public for last time Tuesday at noon.

It was a somber day at Carmel Highland Gold resort where loyal golfers played their final round. Together, they reflected on the hours of solitude, comradery, and priceless memories that many experienced on the course.

The course sits along Interstate 15 and has been a fixture in Rancho Penasquitos since 1967.

However, the owners have decided that the course is too big of a financial drain, with $500,000 spent on water each year alone.

Howard Fujimoto, general manager and director of golf, says there has also been an overall decline in golfers.

The owners plan on tapping into a different market and though no decision has been made about the land's future, golfers are taking a swing at what could take its place.

Carmel Highland Golf Course sits adjacent to the Double Tree Hotel, which will remain open. Other courses across the county that have closed in the past 12 months include the Escondido Country Golf Club and San Luis Rey Downs.
