Dramatic overhaul for downtown La Mesa

Posted: Updated:

LA MESA (CBS 8) - Downtown La Mesa is undergoing a dramatic overhaul which is expected to be complete by October.

The city is making big changes to a stretch of La Mesa Boulevard that runs right through the heart of the city center.

Orange barrels, torn up roads, and barricaded sidewalks line La Mesa Boulevard downtown, creating a construction mess for some local businesses.

Construction started last July and is expected to be completed by October, right before the well known La Mesa Oktoberfest.

The city has been working with businesses since 2008 by keeping one lane open, offering free parking spaces, and creating paths for customers to still walk and shop.

Improvements are being made to the 40-year-old downtown on five blocks. Each block takes about two months to complete. Crews are working to update crosswalks, curbs, gutters, lighting, benches, trash receptacles and recycling containers. Crews are also updating street signs and uprooting trees.

The old trees are not considered to be urban friendly and will be replaced during the final phase of construction.

Shop owners just hope their businesses won't buckle during all the construction.

The city says it has stayed on schedule for each phase and plans to complete construction by October.
