Reward offered for City Heights arsonist

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities announced a reward of up to $2,000 on Friday for information leading to the arrest of the vandal or vandals responsible for at least 15 arson fires that have plagued City Heights-area neighborhoods in recent weeks.

The monetary incentive for tips about the spree of malicious fires -- which have charred trash piles, flatbed trailers, discarded mattresses, commercial garbage bins and beds of pickup trucks -- is a joint offering of San Diego County Crime Stoppers and Councilwoman Marti Emerald's office.

"All San Diegans should feel safe in their communities," Emerald said.

"That is why I am committed to finding (whoever is) responsible for these fires."

The blazes, which have caused no reported injuries or serious structural damage, occurred in the late-night and early-morning hours on the following dates and blocks:

-- March 4, 5200 Rex Ave.;

-- March 5, 5200 Landis St.;

-- March 5, 5200 Ogden St.;

-- March 5, 5000 Wightman St.;

-- March 5, 5300 Wightman St.;

-- March 13, 3600 Knoxie St.;

-- March 13, 3700 Shiloh Road;

-- March 13, 3800 Shiloh Road;

-- March 13, 5100 Wightman St.;

-- March 15, 6300 University Ave.;

-- March 17, 5200 52nd Place;

-- March 22, 5300 Wightman St.;

-- March 24, 5200 Landis St.;

-- March 31, 5100 Landis St.; and

-- March 31, 5200 Landis St.
