SAN YSIDRO (CNS) - Five adults and three children needed emergency lodging Monday following a fire at their San Ysidro home.

Mechanical work on a car in front of the two-story home at 2990 Brando Drive sparked the blaze around 7:15 p.m. Sunday, Capt. Joseph Amador of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said. Flames quickly spread to the garage and smoke wafted into the upstairs and attic.

Amador said the family was able to escape the fire, but firefighters had to rescue a dog and a bird. All were uninjured.

Fire crews extinguished the blaze in about 25 minutes. Amador said the fire caused about $100,000 in damage.
