New plan to combat homelessness in Hillcrest

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A new program is being launched to deal with homelessness in Hillcrest.

A press conference wrapped up Monday morning to announce the collaborative effort between the Hillcrest Business Association and the Alpha Project.

Area business leaders say the number of homeless people has increased over the past few years and they say that they want to help the homeless instead of kicking them out.

This could mean directing the homeless to a local shelter or other services provided by the city. Officials believe homeless people like Hillcrest because of the nearby hospitals and surrounding canyons in Balboa Park.

The Alpha Project will receive $50,000 over the course of a year to create a homeless outreach team to encourage the homeless to seek help. $30,000 of the money is being funded by local business owners. The remaining $20,000 is coming from a grant provided by city councilman Todd Gloria's office.

"My hope is that in the next few months, you will see a decrease in the homeless population here and we can bring this program to other neighborhoods," Gloria said.
