Elliot's success story

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - As a physical therapist of kids with disabilities a local woman named Jodi had a lot of interaction with children at work. But something was missing at home. Jodi wanted to be a mom, so she decided to adopt.

Elliot is two and a half and he's has made big strides. Since being adopted, his start in life was anything but stable.

“He had low tone, hypotonia, he was neglected and no one cared for him,” said Jodi.

Elliot, who also has a liver disease and reflux, was diagnosed with "failure to thrive," but at the age of 10 months, Elliot was dealt a new hand in life when he was matched with his mom Jodi.

“The biggest challenge we had was eating. He went to a lot of occupational therapy for that and just being able to drink something for the first time, because he never drank from a bottle or anything by mouth until he was over a year old,” said Jodi.

But with the unconditional love, dedication and support from his mom, Elliot is now thriving and stronger than ever.

“I'm a physical therapist with the county, so I work with kids birth to 21 years old with physical disabilities,” explained Jodi. “He's definitely come a long way and that's really exciting for me to see him. He can eat and drink now.”

“He was delayed with all of his skills when I first got him but you know, but now he walks, he runs, he loves to play baseball and soccer and he's learning to ride a bike. He's talking up a storm lately with is fun, starting to read books with me,” she continued.

One of their favorites is titled: “We belong together”

Jodi says she couldn't be happier with her decision to adopt:

“It's awesome, it's challenging sometimes, but I think it's challenging for anybody with a kid, with or without medical needs, but it's fun. It's exciting.”

“I always thought if I didn't have a kid by a certain age, I wanted to adopt a kid with a disability. So that's kind of how I started the process,” Jodi added.

And she is inspiring others to adopt as well.

“I actually have a couple friends who've thought ‘oh if Jodi did it, then I can do it.'”

Jodi is also very grateful for the help and support from her family, friends and boyfriend Chris who have all embraced her little superman.

“It's, it's awesome, I'm really glad that I did this,” said Jodi. “It's really rewarding.”
