EL CAJON (CNS) - A La Mesa man who severely beat a 76-year-old Army veteran during a road-rage dispute in an El Cajon parking lot was sentenced Tuesday to eight years in state prison.

Thomas Clayton Sikes, 57, was convicted of assault causing great bodily injury and elder abuse in the April 30, 2014, attack on Ron Tornocello.

Sikes -- who is about 6 feet 3 and weighs 285 pounds -- attacked the older man about 10 a.m. after a dispute in the 500 block of Fletcher Parkway, then fled in a red SUV.

The victim was talking on a cell phone while driving in a parking lot outside a drugstore, and that set off his attacker, authorities said. Surveillance cameras captured images of the fight, which left the victim with broken bones in his face, among other serious injuries.

Sikes' attorney claimed his client acted in self-defense.

The defendant, who has a history of driving-related violence, was arrested last July 24, based on an anonymous tip, said Deputy District Attorney Carlos Campbell.
