Tree trimmer rescued in Tecolote Canyon area

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - It took emergency crews about an hour Thursday to rescue a tree trimmer who wound up trapped roughly 40 feet off the ground when bulky dead fronds collapsed around him atop a towering palm tree in Bay Park.

It happened just before 10 a.m. behind a home at the corner of Nashville Street and Tonopah Avenue, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Crews extended ladders from two trucks on opposite sides of the tree to get to the victim, who was conscious and alert and suspended by his safety harness while being cut free from the heavy foliage, SDFRD spokesman Lee Swanson said.

The personnel got the worker out of the backyard tree shortly after 11 a.m., and medics took him to a hospital for an evaluation.

The victim was working with a crew of trimmers when the mishap occurred, Swanson said.
