Construction starts on new East Village high rise

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Developers broke ground Friday on the newest high-rise in the East Village - a 37-story apartment tower adjacent to Petco Park in downtown San Diego.

The 720-unit Ballpark Village project will be built by Greystar, a real estate management company based in Charleston, South Carolina. Some of the units will be set aside for affordable housing.

The development on 3.9 acres bounded by Park Boulevard and Imperial and 12th avenues, just east of Petco Park, will also include 58,000 square feet of retail space and 267 public parking spaces for Padres games and special events.

Community groups are scheduled to take part in the groundbreaking event.

The original developers agreed to a package of community benefits, including the creation of affordable housing both on- and off-site, hiring local construction workers and paying them a living wage. Greystar is complying with the deal, according to city staff.

The City Council approved a transfer of the development agreement to Greystar, from JMI Realty, at Monday's meeting.

Construction is expected to be complete in 2018.
