105 personal items of Tony Gwynn up for auction

Posted: Updated:
SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - If you love sports memorabilia or if you're just a fan of Tony Gwynn, then you can check out some of Tony's personal memorabilia at an auction. A collection of 105 of his items are being auctioned off and part of the proceeds will benefit a cause close to Tony's heart.

"Each of these items comes directly from Poway from the Gwynn residence. So the provenance of each item is impeccable," said Terry Melia with SCP Auctions.

The provenance of these items is of the highest order, including a game-used bat, the ball from his 1500th career hit, and his Aztecs basketball jersey. All of these priceless pieces used to hang or be displayed in Tony's home.

"Alicia decided she would like to continue Tony's dream of helping kids," continued Terry, who adds that it is difficult for her to part with these items, but she's doing it for a good cause.

"A portion of the proceeds will go to the Tony and Alicia Gwynn Foundation," said Terry.

Two items that caught my eye were his all-star ring from 1999. It was his final all-star game and the one in which he helped Ted Williams throw the ceremonial first pitch. The second item was in recognition of his 3,000th hit - a large frame featuring 11 personal letters from previous members of the 3,000 hit club. The piece includes autographs from Pete Rose, Stan Musial, Robin Yount, and eight other hall of famers.

"We have the starting bid at $2,500. We expect it to go for as much as $15,000," added Terry.

The ball he broke the Padres hits record with could fetch as much as $2,000.

The auction will take place online through SCP Auctions and conclude on Saturday, April 25, 2015.  To view and bid on the items available, visit scpauctions.com

All these items can be yours, for the right price. CBS News 8's John Howard has additional details from Kearny Mesa in the above video report.
