Man arrested after cutting teen with box cutter

Posted: Updated:

LEMON GROVE (CNS) - Two teenagers showed up at the Lemon Grove sheriff's substation, one with cuts from a box cutter and another who had been robbed, and with enough evidence to prompt the arrest of the assailant.

The two teens said they were confronted by the suspect near a Cricket Wireless store on the 7700 block of Palm Street in Lemon Grove at about 7 p.m. on Saturday, a sheriff's report said Sunday.

A fight broke out between one teen and the suspect and ended when the suspect pulled out a box cutter and slashed the teen's arm. The boy was not seriously hurt.

Before running away, the man took the second teenager's backpack, which contained a laptop. The two teens decided not to stop the suspect, fearing he would attack them with the box cutter again, the sheriff's department said.

The teenagers made their way to a nearby sheriff's substation a few blocks away and reported the assault and robbery. Sheriff's officers went to the scene and recovered clothing and a box cutter.

Based on the suspect's description, sheriff's officers believed the man to be a frequent offender and patrolled areas he was known to hang out around.

The suspect was found on Lemon Grove Avenue just after 9 p.m. with the teen's stolen backpack.

The teenagers identified the suspect in a curbside line-up and he was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and robbery.

The teenager injured by the box cutter suffered from minor arm lacerations and did not need medical attention.
