John Albert Young, 42, is suspected of intentionally steering his white Ford F-350 into cars on northbound Interstate 805 near Governor Drive and southbound State Route 163 in the area of Friars Road on Thursday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Following the second of the two non-injury crashes, officers tracked Young down at a Kearny Mesa business and arrested him, CHP spokesman Jake Sanchez said.
Young's four-door crew-cab truck, which matched witness descriptions of the one involved in the collisions, was impounded, Sanchez said.
Young, a San Diego resident, was booked on suspicion of two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. He was released from custody on bond this afternoon, a jail clerk said.
Investigators believe Young may have committed similar offenses on local roadways in recent months, Sanchez said. Anyone who has had a threatening or destructive run-in with the same type of pickup -- Young's vehicle is customized with large tires, chrome rims and a raised suspension -- was asked to call CHP Officer Brad Clinkscales at (858) 637-3800.
