Unhealthy levels of bacteria in ocean after rain

Posted: Updated:
SAN DIEGO (AP) - San Diego County environmental health officials are warning surfers, swimmers and other ocean-goers that they might want to avoid the water for a while after recent rains.

The county issued a general advisory Friday for its coastal waters, saying levels of bacteria could reach unhealthy levels from sources like animal waste, soil and decomposing vegetation.

The county says people should be especially wary of areas near storm drains, creeks and rivers, and especially for the first 72 hours after rains.
