SDPD unveils memorial cruiser

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - On Wednesday, the San Diego Police Department unveiled a monument in front of the police headquarters as a special way to remember the 32 San Diego officers who risked and gave their lives to protect their communities.

It is called "Honor One," because it will pay homage to each of the fallen officers, their names proudly displaced.

It's an especially significant memorial as parts of the country grapple with tense relations between law enforcement and the community.

"They dedicated their lives to the defense," said Chief Shelly Zimmerman.

Tiffany Griffin-Stence was only 15-years-old when her father, San Diego Officer Gerald Griffin Jr., was killed while on duty.

"He was the greatest dad. We had the most fun," she said.

Twelve-years after her father's death, Tiffany was at the dedication ceremony.

"Everybody forgets, but we don't. We still live this every day. This is still a huge pull on our lives." said Leslie Kelly.

Throughout the state, almost 1,600 California law enforcement officers have lost their lives while in the line of duty, according to the Officer Down Memorial website. More than 20,000 officers have died on the job nationwide.
