SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - California's population grew about 1 percent last year to 38.7 million people, with San Diego and San Jose experiencing the most gains among big cities.

The state Department of Finance released figures Friday showing California added 358,000 residents in 2014. The growth rate mirrors that of recent years and was widely distributed throughout the state.

Los Angeles grew 1.1 percent and remains the state's largest city with nearly 4 million people. However, San Diego and San Jose each grew at a rate of about 1.5 percent.

San Joaquin County was the fastest-growing county in the state, adding nearly 11,000 people. It was closely followed by Imperial County and three San Francisco Bay Area counties.

The fastest-growing city in the state was Taft in Kern County, which reopened a correctional facility.
