Local D.A: Prosecutors face challenges in Baltimore police convictions

Posted: Updated:
SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - On Friday, six Baltimore police officers were charged in the death of Freddie Gray, but San Diego's former district attorney said prosecutors will face challenges in getting convictions.

The charges Baltimore officers face range from assault to second-degree murder.

Former San Diego District Attorney Paul Pfingst said it will be difficult to convict the officers for using force over the course of their duties.

If the case goes to trial, deciding the venue will be a big issue, according to Pfingst. "If it's tried in Baltimore, you have twelve people thinking, if we find these officers not guilty, this town will burn," he said.

He also said the outcome of the case will rely heavily on testimony from medical experts from both sides.

From the six officers, five have been released, but all have posted bond.
