Community rallies behind family killed in I-15 wrong way crash

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - On Saturday, 55-year-old Rodolfo De La Torre and 84-year-old Teresa Esparza Hernandez were killed, and four others were injured after a suspected drunk driver drove the wrong way on southbound Interstate-15.

The De La Torres family was driving Southbound on I-15 when a suspected drunk driver going the wrong way crashed into them.

Their friends, Julio and Carlo were hospitalized and in critical condition. Their mother was also taken to the hospital.

"I was just honestly in complete shock. Complete shock," said Breena Sobrito.

With funeral cots and hospital bills mounting, family and friends setup a GoFundMe page.

Why? Because Julio and Carolina would have done the exact same thing, according to friends.

"It makes it so much more real when you know someone personally, and I think, I just felt like we needed to do something," said Sabrina Reiman.

San Diego has rallied behind the family and $10,000 have been donated in less than 24 hours.

"When we went to school he (Rodolfo) was just always like what do you need. My mom bumped into him one time and he said what do you need me to pray for," said Sobrito.

The driver accused of causing the accident is 21-year-old Shane McDonald, according to police.

For Brenna and Sabrina, the story is not just about raising money, but about awareness.

"Don't drink and drive, please. You're not only hurting yourself, you're mainly hurting other people. I don't think people realize how much they hurt other people," said Rieman.

McDonald was expected to face charges of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and five counts of felony DUI causing injury or death. He was likely to be arraigned in his hospital room sometime over the next several days, CHP public-affairs Officer Jake Sanchez said.
