Search for burglar who struck while victims slept

Posted: Updated:
CORONADO (CBS 8) - Coronado police are searching for a brazen burglar who slipped into two homes while his victims were sleeping early Friday morning.

At around 5:30 a.m. Friday, a home surveillance camera captured video of a man casing a Coronado home on the 200 block of E Avenue while the residents were sleeping. He can be seen using a cell phone flashlight to peer inside as he paces back and forth on the front porch before he located an unlocked window, police say.

"He eventually was able to gain entry into the home and based on the surveillance video we have, he was in the home for approximately 20 minutes," says Coronado Police officer Sergeant Kevin Shank.

The suspect then made a hasty exit out the front door of the home, taking a laptop, tablet, sunglasses and cash with him.

Police believe, based on time and proximity, the same man then walked around the corner and proceeded to break into another home on the 900 block of Second Street through an unlocked patio door. The suspect then took cell phones and cash after rifling through the residents belongings while they slept.

Neighbors say brazen break-ins like these are not common in the community.

"Folks, I think, feel safe here, so typically, they wont lock their windows, wont lock their doors," says local resident Jim Rodman.

Police say investigators were able to lift the suspect's fingerprints from one of the windows.

"We're hoping the fingerprints will come back and it will ID someone who is already in the system," says Sergeant Shank.

Police say that fingerprint evidence is now being analyzed by the crime lab with the hope of finding a match in the criminal database. If you would like to take a closer look at the surveillance video, click here.
