PHOENIX (AP) — Aaron Hill and A.J. Pollock homered to back five pitchers who carried the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 2-1 victory over the San Diego Padres on Sunday.

Daniel Hudson, making his first major league start since June 2012, was limited to 56 pitches in 3 1-3 scoreless innings. He's been used out of the bullpen since returning late last season from two Tommy John surgeries.

Not announced as the starter until early Sunday, Hudson allowed two hits and left the bases loaded after striking out five and walking two. J.C. Ramirez, just called up from Triple-A Reno, escaped the jam unscathed.

Ramirez (1-0) earned his first career win, allowing a run and four hits while striking out three in 2 2-3 innings. He also pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth.

Oliver Perez, Evan Marshall and Addison Reed combined for three innings of scoreless relief for Arizona. Reed earned his second save of the season.

Hill homered off Padres starter Andrew Cashner (1-6) in the second inning, and Pollock connected in the third.

Cashner went seven innings, allowing four hits with six strikeouts. His ERA dropped to 3.07.

San Diego scored on Jedd Gyorko's two-out single in the sixth that drove in Will Venable, who singled and stole second. Venable had two hits on the day and six in the three-game series.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Padres: Cory Luebke was scheduled to long toss. He is recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Padres: After an off day in the Pacific Northwest, the Padres open a two-game set in Seattle on Tuesday. Ian Kennedy (2-1) will make his first career appearance against the Mariners. ... James Shields (4-0) will take his regular turn Wednesday on four days' rest. San Diego manager Bud Black will push back Odrisamer Despaigne following an off day Monday and go with Tyson Ross on Thursday at home against Washington, followed by Despaigne or Cashner on Friday.

Diamondbacks: Josh Collmenter (3-3) starts Monday against Washington. He is 3-1 with a 2.40 ERA in his last four starts. The Nationals announced their three starters for the series: Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg and Gio Gonzalez.
