New Trends: Mom Caves

Posted: Updated:
SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Men have man caves, but they are no longer the only ones with a space to call their own. Now, an increasing number of woman are designing their own "Mom Cave," a personalized space that belongs to the lady of the house.

Mother's Day might have come and gone, but moms still need a quite space where they can retreat to for some time. A place where they can pick up a book, kick-up their heels, and escape from reality.

Mom caves are a growing trend among woman.

"It's where I come to find peace and serenity. not to be confused with a man cave, which are usually very loud, have a lot of loud electronics," said Heather Young Leary.

A mom cave is where a woman can literally hide for some alone time to retreat from the demands of her kids.

"I think it's very important for moms to find space to do what they love to do too, so I decided to create this space, that was just for me," said  Leary.

Creativity expert and party planner Heather Young Leary said, rule number one, surround yourself with items you love.

"It needs to occupy things that represent you, things that make you happy. I have one rule of thumb, whether it's in here, or just in my house in general, if it doesn't make me smile, then it's time to let it go," she said.

Leary said it does not have be an entire room. It can be a corner or even a re-purposed closet.

"It does not have to be this extravagant, not at all.. It's a place for you .. that's the important thing, a place for you to go, to find peace, that's all about you," she said.

How to get started?

Leary suggested to first find a you space. Then, add a comfortable char, a small desk or end table, a pretty lamp, and a scented candle.

Then she encourages moms to only add things that make them happy. She also encouraged mom to include a vision board to hang pictures of goals and dreams.
